REDSTAR
A gregarious pop star, stone cold director and adoring fan are all encompassed by actress Maija Knapp as she portrays them in the midst of a do or die audition. Through trials and tribulations, the final performance culminates into a splicing of personalities and the reflection of selves. Pop is in the forefront, but bubbling underneath the surface, chaos ensues.
Commissioned by Lankershim Arts Center’s 2024 Dance in the City, RED STAR is a character study into the world of pop stardom. Kevin Zambrano investigates the sparkling thread that connects these stereotyped characters through exaggerating their cliche personalities to the point of exhaustion and the grotesque. With references like Suspiria and Party Monster, color plays a key role in distinguishing the multiple guises of the singular beast as well as quick transitions to keep the chaos afoot. These rooms in which the characters play in, live within a larger house called the Red Curtain - an overarching concept Zambrano continues to craft his work within and is excited to welcome the RED STAR to.
